Chapter 5

Angelique sat across from Steven’s large mahogany desk. She flipped through pages of blueprints before she slid a few photos to him for his perusal. “I scouted out this building to house the offices while we begin construction. If we’re aggressive, and barring bad weather, it should be completed in eighteen months. In the interim, I already have thirteen contracts ready to go here and another seven in China. That should keep David’s projections on target and place us ahead of our original timeline by seven months.”

A smile spread his lips as he stared at the paperwork, and he looked up in time to see Angelique make a note on the pad of paper in her lap. “You never told me; how was Bali?”

“Oh Steven, it was gorgeous! The weather was perfect, and we saw a lot of sights. The cultural history there is amazing. We plan to go back.” There was a far-off look in her eyes as she spoke, as if she relived the trip while she sat in her chair.

“I’m glad.” He paused for several moments as he watched her face. “I’m really going to miss you. I know there’s no one better suited than you for this, but it’ll be strange not having you in the office day and night.” He released a chuckle, but inside, a mixture of pride and sorrow battled for control as he looked into her brown eyes. All of their time working together came to mind, and it evoked the image of the day her résumé was passed across his desk.

“Well, you’ll be spending a bit of time in my neck of the woods, and there will be times when I’ll be here. Don’t worry, Steven; I’m not out of your hair by any stretch of the imagination!” Her laugh was tinged with a bittersweet tone as she looked to the empty chair to her right.

There were a few moments of silence between them before he moved around his desk to stand in front of the remaining half of his dynamic duo. “Be safe, Angelique.” He pulled her out of her chair and into a hug.

“See you in eight weeks.” She hugged him back. He wanted to take comfort in that, but the feeling eluded him. “Thank you, for everything.”

“I should be thanking you! Just be careful, okay? Promise me that if something doesn’t seem right, you’ll come back here.”

“I’ll be fine.”

There were too many thoughts inside his head for him to settle on just one, but he couldn’t shake the compulsion to warn her. No, I have to let her go. We’ll never get closer than this, and we can’t let this opportunity slip away. When she turned to walk away, he felt regret as he made his way back to his chair, and he eyed the schematics on his desk as if they were somehow tainted. When his gaze fell on the empty chairs across from his desk that David and Angelique occupied so often, a familiar feeling of guilt crept up the back of his throat in the form of reflux.
